The SportsIcon Fantasy Premier League (FPL) was a fiercely competitive competition in last season’s 2022/23 competition.

With over 200 entries in the SportsIcon League, the eventual winner was FPLAcumen.

With over 11 million players of FPL worldwide, FPL Acumen finished 2638 in the world! That is the top 0.02%

With that level excellence in our community, we asked FPLAcumen if he’d share some of his top tips with SportsIcon. Here is what he predicts for the 2023/24 season. Let us know on our socials, which ones you’ll be following.

So… FPL Acumen

What set you apart from everyone last season?

Consistency in decision-making across the season, almost every gameweek, is generally needed to get a high rank. Often minimising risk and ‘playing safe’ is the way to go for a lot of the season and then executing a strong chip strategy and using hits when required for double gameweeks were important factors for me doing well last season.

What was your best decision/transfer last season?

My best decision last season might’ve been making decisions the day before the deadline and focusing much less time on FPL earlier in the week. In terms of transfers, bringing in Alvarez and Kiwior at the end of the season are fresh in the mind of targeting underpriced players who I thought could sustain good minutes for Man City and Arsenal, and they did.

Who is your must have pick of this 2023/24 season coming?

Haaland is basically ‘essential’. He will be the best captaincy option in nearly all gameweeks for the start of the season, particularly given there will be no midweek games so he should play close to 90 minutes in a lot of games from the start. I also think Gabriel Magalhães for Arsenal will be good value.

Who is your ‘under the radar’ pick of the season? (Under 5% owned)

I think Pau Torres is going under the radar when you consider his ownership is just 3.4%. He might be the best option from Aston Villa’s defence, which could improve even further under Emery. Also keep an eye out for Saša Kalajdžić (0.2% owned, £5.0m) who could be the first-choice striker for Wolves this year, having come back recently from a long-term injury.

Is there a 4.0 million pick you would choose?

Areola if he starts! Otherwise, Bell and Beyer may have a double gameweek during the start of the season, so they could be useful to keep on the bench.

Who will be the flop of the season?

I think Trippier will score a lot less than last season and might end up in the ‘flop’ category. He’s very highly owned for a £6.5m defender which seems quite expensive to me given the alternative options.

Thanks, FPLAcumen.
